These flower balloon decorations can be used in a garden theme party or a little girl’s sunny birthday party and they’re super easy to make. Their decent height and width means you don’t need to make very many, either, to make an impact.
You will need the following supplies to make one of these flower balloon decorations:
12 round, green latex balloons in size 10-12″
2 twisting balloons, size 260 in pearl blue-green
4 round, pink latex balloons in size 5″
4 round, orange latex balloons in size 5″
4 round, red latex balloons in size 5″
4 round, purple latex balloons in size 5″
4 round, yellow latex balloons in size 5″
1 spool of white curling ribbon (not necessary if you twist the balloons together instead of tying them together)
(Note: water balloons will do if you can’t find any 5″ balloons)
The following video demonstrates how to assemble the flower balloon decoration by securing the structure with the curling ribbon. Following the video I’ve outlined the step by step instructions in writing but I use the twisting method which does not require the curling ribbon.
The balloon flower is made up of three parts: the base (the round balloons at the bottom), the stems (the size 260 twisting balloons), and the flowers (made of smaller 5″ balloons or water balloons).
Base Instructions:
- Inflate 2 round, green balloons with an air or hand pump and tie their ends together to form a duplet.
- Repeat step 1 to make a second duplet of green balloons.
- Twist the two duplets together at their center (where the ends are tied together) to secure the two duplets together. You should now have four, green balloons for the first layer of the base.
- Repeat steps 1-3 until you have 3 sets of four, green balloons.
- Take one layer of the green balloons and push the balloons down so that each one touches the ground.
- Take a second layer of the green balloons and lay it on top of the first so that the balloons of the second layer fall in the gaps between each balloon in the first layer. (See Diagram below)
- Take one balloon from the first layer, lift it up between the balloons of the second layer and twist it around the base of a balloon in the second layer a couple of times and then tuck it back down into place in the first layer.
- Take another balloon on the other side of the first layer and repeat the previous step. This secures the two layers together.
- Take the third layer of the green balloons and lay it on top of the second layer, also nestling it so the balloon heads lay in between the gaps of the second layer.
- Take one balloon from the second layer, lift it up between the balloons of the third layer and twist it around the base of a balloon in the third layer a couple of times and then tuck it back down into place in the second layer.
- Take another balloon on the other side of the second layer and repeat the previous step.
Stem Instructions:
- Inflate the two sized 260 twisting balloons leaving about a half an inch at the end so you can attach the flowers.
- Fold each twisting balloon in half and tuck the center of each balloon into the middle of your base structure so the two ends of each balloon stand up from the center of the base.
Balloon Flower Instructions:
- Inflate two of the orange 5″ balloons and tie their ends together.
- Inflate two more of the orange 5″ balloons and one of the yellow 5″ balloons and tie their ends together to form a triplet of balloons.
- Twist the orange balloons in each set together to secure the duplet and triplet to each other.
- Push the yellow balloon around until it stands out from the center of the orange balloons.
- Repeat steps 1-4 for each flower, using the other petal colors for each flower.
Securing the Balloon Flowers:
- You should have four balloon flowers, one to tie on to each of the four stems standing up from the center of your base.
- Each stem has a tying off opportunity at the top – either the tied off end of the balloon or the 1/2 inch of balloon left uninflated.
- Use the balloon ends at the back of each flower to tie the balloon onto a stem.
In the video, the demonstrator has made a larger balloon flower to attach to the wall using the same approach used to make the smaller flowers just with larger balloons.
